In 2020, Cecilia Araneda spoke with Ingrid Vargas as part of a multi-year curatorial research project on Latin Canadian cinema. This is a brief extract of her research.


Colombian-Canadian filmmaker Ingrid Vargas is based in Calgary. She holds a diploma in film and video production from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing a BA in communications and media studies at the University of Calgary. Her credits include ALL SAINTSA Walk Down To Water, and I Love You, Johnny! Her works have been selected for screening by Slamdance, Clermont-Ferrand, the Calgary International Film Festival, the Calgary Underground Film Festival and the Air Canada En Route Film Festival, among others. | ingridvargas.com


Research Notes

Ingrid Vargas was born in Colombia and came to Canada when she was three years old, as her parents had immigrate to Calgary seeking more opportunities for their family. She works as a filmmaker of both independent films and music videos, as well as a producer. As a filmmaker, her primary interest lies in dramas that speak to the Latin diaspora community in North America. She additionally feels strongly connected to the Latino/a/x art and cultural movement in the USA. Among her filmmaker inspirations is Toronto-based Colombian-Canadian filmmaker Lina Rodríguez.
